We came in peace for all mankind.

Here’s how to find out what the moon phase was during Apollo 11’s moon landing.

Phases

  • Go to the settings page and tap Location.
  • Type “UTC” into the search field and tap Greenwich UTC, United Kingdom.
  • Swipe from left to right to go to the calendar page.
  • Tap the month back button until you arrive at July, 1969 (yes, that’s quite a few taps).
  • Tap on the 20th in the calendar. This will go to the details page with July 20, 1969 set.
  • Tap the calendar icon on the top right and set the time to 20:17 (or 8:17PM), then tap done.

Darkness

  • Tap + to add a new location.
  • Type “UTC” into the search field and tap Greenwich UTC, United Kingdom.
  • Tap the calendar icon on the top right and set the time and date so it appears as July, 1969 20:17 (or 8:17PM) for Greenwich, then tap done.

Even though the year isn’t shown in the date and time picker, Darkness does allow for setting the date to any year (so if you scroll past Dec 31, 2010, the date will be Jan 1, 2011). The year does appear at the top of the home screen though, so you can use that to judge what year is being shown.
